What is a Grid-Connected or Net Metering System?
A grid-connected (or net metering) system lets you use solar energy during the day and still stay connected to the electricity grid when you need extra power—like at night or on cloudy days. The smart part? You only pay for the difference between the power you use from the grid and the extra solar power you send back to it.
How it works:
-
When your solar panels produce more electricity than you need, the extra power goes back to the grid.
-
When your solar panels aren’t producing enough (like at night), you automatically use power from the grid.
-
Your electricity meter keeps track of both—the units you take from the grid and the units you send back.
You’re only billed for the “net” units.
Example:
-
If you use 100 units from the grid in a month and send 80 units of solar power back to the grid, you’ll only pay for 20 units.
-
If you send more than you use—say, you use 100 units but export 120 units—then the electricity board (KEB) will pay you for the extra 20 units.
-
This calculation is settled at the end of each month—there’s no carry forward.
